In my last post I shortly introduced an alternative to the daily struggle with credit cards (Coin). Without any doubts, we can expect that mobile payment methods will take over our wallets soon and we are already trading digital currencies like bitcoins. Now, modern banking is about to enter our lives.

I am convinced there is a lot of potential when it comes to a more educated way to spend money. Also the management of peoples finances can be a great selling point for Simple. How many credit and debit cards are you carrying around with out? My count varies between 3-4. None of them are logically linked and thus totally independent. If I loose my card, I have to reconstruct my entire day, make some calls and hope I find it in time before somebody takes advantage of my finances.
Now you can replace all your credit cards with a single one. Linked to a mobile app, all payments can be monitored from a single source and you can easily switch between private credit card, household debit card or the company business card.
This idea is so simple and that´s what makes it so beautiful. COIN.
Apple presented iOS 7 last week at the WWDC 2013. If you do not want to wait until fall, here is a HOW TO install iOS 7, even if you do not have an Apple Developer Account:
1) Download iOS 7.
Search for iOS 7 Beta on Google and you will find a pre-release version of iOS 7 for the respective device.

2) Make a Backup!!!
There is always a chance something goes wrong or your phone does not function as smooth with the new operations system. To avoid a catastrophe, save your data on your computer via iTunes.
2) Restore your iPhone.
Connect your iPhone to iTunes via USB and klick on Restore. This will clear out your phone and put it into default mode.
3) Install iOS 7.
After your phone is restored and running again, set it up as new and connect it to iTunes again. Search for updates by klicking on the button while you hold the SHIFT (Windows) or ALT (Mac) key. This allows you to manually search for the iOS you downloaded earlier. Select the iOS 7 beta file (.ipsw).
4) Wait. Restart.
Your iPhone should restart automatically after iOS 7 is installed. Enjoy!
I received positive and negative feedback. In one case, the iOS would not run at all on an iPhone 4S, however, it works fine on mine. Just in case you are not pleased with the beta version, make use of the recovery mode and restore your iPhone with your iOS 6 Backup.

I was happy to test a prototype during the Syracuse Startup-Weekend last weekend. It is breathtaking how seamlessly, easily and fast the multi-touch input works. The motion recognition is crazy accurate for every individual finger, tracks all 10 fingers up to 1/100th of a millimeter and is up to 200 times more sensitive than existing motion-control technology. Check out their promotion video and you will understand what I am talking about.
Color management is all about linking different processes and creating independent workflows for color data. In order to establish a standard, rules and specifications have been defined. Especially the ICC profiles by the European Color Initiative (ECI) improved color management significantly. But sometimes standard is not good enough!
The team at Serum-Network is always eager to achieve the best possible results. Therefore we developed our own tools and profiles without ignoring the ICC specifications.
To give you an idea what difference profiles can make in a color transformation check out the following example: This is an eciRGB test image that is created to check the transformation smoothness of a color profile.

When you convert this images in Adobe Photoshop perceptive to standard ISOcoatedV2 (ECI) you get the following result:

The CMYK target color space is way smaller than the RGB source color space, therefore some color differences are normal effects due to different gamut size. The important point here is that throughout the conversion the smooth color gradations gets lost and even color shifts become visible. ECI profiles try to compensate lower saturation by manipulating the color transformation slightly. The colors are than higher saturated, however, some colors are drifting. Sometimes pure yellow turns out to be greenish and blue might drift into purple.
Dropouts in the color gradation and mainly color differences can be very ugly and minimize the quality of your color reproduction depending on your image. Now, when you do a perceptual color transformation with our CC_ISOcoatedV2 profile you will get this:

You can see that color gradation is smoother, there are less dropouts and color shiftings are minimized. Compare for instance the blue corner on the right: CC stays blue and does not drift into purple like in case of the ECI profile.
The CC profiles are written with a special software that uses optimized algorithms for the profil generation. The outcome profile focuses on smooth transformation without color manipulation for a higher "fake" saturation. What that means for color transformation can be seen above. You could even drive it further and combine these profiles with DeviceLink technology. The results using DeviceLink conversion are remarkable, but more about that in another blog.
What you should learn from this article is, that ECI profiles usually bring out good results and most people would be fine with it. However, for high value color reproduction you should use a software or work with color specialists that go beyond standard color management.

We just came across this interesting online article from Eddy Hagen (Managing Director and Trend Watcher VIGC), who did a research on reliability of myPantone iPhone app. Everybody who has a slightly understanding of color management knows that iPhone´s on-screen color rendering can not be accurate. Due to the facts that iPhone does not have a calibrated screen, no CMM (Color Matching Module) and a limited colorspace, there is no possibility of providing visual reliability and the research of VIGC made this really obvious.
In fairness, Pantone/X-Rite never claimed total reliability. It is not their fault that there is no smartphone providing the technology for accuracy when it comes to color referencing. Also, the fact that there is such a huge difference between individual iPhone devices can not blamed on Pantone., but on Apple. Pantone simply developed an app that looks nice and might come in handy when you forgot how Pantone 104-4-1 C looks like (It is green). But it´s not a professional color reference tool and I have to agree with Mr. Hagen on this point: Pantone should do better than that.
So we felt obliged to compare our app with myPantone, since Colorconvert is going to be the first professional color management app for iPhone. We implemented a CMM to provide color conversion on a professional level, comparable to high value software. We started taking color conversion on such a device seriously, and not like other applications that mention a colorspace without clarifying which RGB or CMYK they are talking about. Even Pantone did not specify RGB as sRGB. They might refer to AdobeRGB, AppleRGB, eciRGB or GameBoy Color RGB. Who knows?
Colorconvert also does not claim to be color reliable. As already explained, it is not possible. However, it is possible to do better! We developed an iPhone ICC-Profil, by measuring the monitors of 3 different devices (each in 3 sets). The average of the different performances were used for the ICC-Profil. We did the same for iPad and iPod. Together with the technology of Colorconvert you get the following results:
As you can see Colorconvert´s display (dark frame) is closer to the actual Pantone color than the myPantone app, which is too yellowish. However, it is not 100%.
Another feature of Colorconvert shows you why iPhone is not capable of rendering this color exactly. You can see sRGB compared to RGB-iPhone4G (yellow outline). It´s color- space is just too small and does not contain the color area where Pantone 37-5-1 C is located in.
Colorconvert is available on the App Store. It allows you to manage all your color palettes, no matter which colorspace. Create your own color arrays or use international color systems. We have implemented Web Named Colors, but you can also add other color systems either via free sideload of .qcl-data or via In-App-Purchase. Convert them via ICC-Profiles and DeiveLink-Profiles to every colorspace you need and always get perfect results with reliable color values for your target colorspace.
